Nova Turin

Sean Jackson had opened the cell and guided the preacher inside. He rushed his hand through his hair. It had been a wild night. He’d had his eye on Salla since she’d been back, unsure of exactly what to do with her. The remaining settlers on Nova Turin had been through enough. The last thing they needed was trouble from outside, but she was a Nova’ girl, born and raised here. She had helped evacuate people during the War Fuel Uprising and her family had been killed under Gray. She was owed some protection.

But still, he was an inquisitive sort. He’d known she’d been on the Outpost and pretended to be surprised when she told him. She’d shown up on Nova Turin in an unregistered shuttle. That was curious, but people had lots of unusual journeys out here on the raggedy edges of human settlement. His question was, what happened in the two weeks between the destruction of the Outpost and when she had arrived on Nova Turin? He had his suspicions and decided to try them out on the man occupying the cell.

“Highland huh?” Sean asked the preacher. “You’re from Highland, come here for that girl, haven’t you?”

“That the place with all the dust? I woke up in the snow and the dust. I’d been in a box and there were tentacles around me, keeping me alive.”

“I’m guessing you’re not all plugged in, are you?”

“I’m learning fast,” the preacher replied.

Sean scanned the man again with his smart-device. There were no personal identifiers on any factors, not even DNA. The only thing left to do was a retina scan. “Come up to the bars and open your eye wide.”

The preacher complied; his hands still restrained behind him. The red light moved across the man’s retina and to his surprise, the device dinged positively.

“Well, that’s surprising!” Sean staggered backwards, drawing his weapon from its holster. “You can’t be who this says you are!”

“I’m not sure who I am. Vincent said I wasn’t a good man before I was born.”

“No, you’re not a good man at all. You’re Emmanuel Gray!” Sean brushed the light that hung from the ceiling, making it sway back and forth. He could feel his heart pounding in his chest and a ball forming in his throat, but then there was something more.

It seemed like the room was spinning and a deep, gross purple haze came over his vision. The Preacher, Emmanuel Gray wearing another man’s face, grew tall – his legs pushing him up to the top of the cell. The man’s form fell to the ground now and writhed, breaking into snakes and sliding through the bars around Sean’s feet.

A deep foreboding came over Sean, a sense of eternal suffering. In that moment, he simply knew that this small room would be his tomb. A dark oily substance crawled up the walls, covering the windows, blocking out everything that wasn’t happening between these four walls. Before he even knew it, he was tearing at his eyes, trying to stop the horrors from reaching him.
